Zoria + Nadia

This year I worked on two collaborations, you have seen the posts about Elephant Cosmetics a collaboration with Mr. Twist.

Zoria + Nadia is a project I'm working on with my friend Zorianna Altomar. We are presenting a line of prints and scarves inspired by Ukranian embroideries created by Zorianna’s maternal grandmother, my own grandmother was also a woman who worked with the needle, she was a seamstress and this inspired me even more to create these designs. When I was little, I had to do some embroideries myself, I disliked it so much, my grandma helped me fishing them so I could pass the class.

When I first saw the original embroideries, I had the desired to take the beautifully designed elements and free them up. I created digital images of the elements and started to play.  My own work influenced me to created some of the pieces like Stardust was inspired by Viento Estrellado.
In a way, technology has been an inspiration on my work for some time now, so adding something technological to this body of work was just natural, that is when I started to incorporate the QR codes to some of the designs.

These are some of the designs

They are on view at Zorya Fine Art, 38 E Putnam Ave, Greenwich, CT 06830

Flying Colors, Ilona Sochynsky

My curatorial debut, Flying Colors and exhibition of paintings by Ilona Sochynsky at Zorya Fine Art, Greenwich, CT.

Sochynsky invites you to let your imagination go with her new series of paintings titled "Fugues."

The juxtaposition of colors and shapes helps to create an illusion that stimulates the eye and the mind. Like individual melodies that form a larger musical composition--a fugue or a symphony--her paintings engage in an exciting dialogue, building on the foundations of contrast, rhythm, balance, and harmony.  Each piece is like a small window that explores a different world or possibility, each one is an emphatic achievement.

Flying Colors is an exhibition that combines strength and perseverance. We are putting our colors up to signify our triumphs and victories.

I have currently embarked on a new series of circle paintings titled “Fugues”. Using the circular form I attempt to interweave fragments and textures into a contrapuntal composition, whose basic structure consists of themes stated successively in different voices. With these paintings I aspire to create a state of harmony and to provoke a dreamlike state of altered consciousness in the viewer.  -  Ilona Sochynsky

From The Heart at Zorya Fine Art Gallery

I'm exhibiting several works at Zorya Fine Art, including my latest piece Finding My Way and Stardust (this piece is on collaboration with Zorya)

FROM THE HEART

January 16, 2016 - March 30, 2016

In one of the most memorable moments in Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince, the main character learns an important, if simple, secret: “one sees well only with the heart.”

Seeing with the heart is what brings forth giving from the heart. Generosity is enabled and enriched by empathy. From the Heart, the latest exhibition at Zorya Fine Art, brings together an international team of artists united and inspired by this underlying principle. Their explorations lead them to engage with imagery and media raging from traditional to boldly experimental.

Speaking from the heart means sharing both laughter and pain; it is an outpouring of love and a determination to persevere in struggles large and small. In the dark short days of winter, it reveals to us new sources of light. Seeing with your heart is about establishing and nurturing community, not by denying or suppressing our identities but by reaching out and discovering new things to embrace.

In their quest to speak from the heart, a Honduran artist can find inspiration in the traditional patterns and symbolism of Ukrainian embroidery, a Ukrainian artist can playfully reference Jasper Johns, an artist working with abstract imagery can find unexpected affinities with the figurative. In the process, traditions are celebrated and subverted; irony discovers a profound spiritual dimension. Such new connections help us rethink who we are and find new ways to understand and celebrate our own unique contributions to this world.

In short, new ways of engaging with art are born that unite seeing with our eyes with seeing with our hearts.

Zorya Fine Art invites you to join us on this journey of exploration and discovery.

Curated by Professor Vitaly Chernetsky, Associate Professor, Dept. of Slavic Languages and Literatures, University of Kansas and President of the Zorya, Inc., Foundation.
