In my search, I went deep into my childhood memories, back to "La Sierpe," my grandpa's molienda, his artisanal sugarcane mill, and plantation, and found my sweet and happy place—a wonderful space to escape from everything happening around me. In that memory, I found a new meaning for 'sweetness' that went beyond something that could be experienced with one sense. Remembering my family working together to make from scratch something sweet, I realized that the sweetness that I was looking for was found in community, traditions, and laughter. My project, Promise of Sweetness, chronicles the growing of sugarcane from seed to plant in an effort to conjure this happiness." – Nadia Martinez

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com039 Franklin St, Stamford, CT 06901, USA41.0569245 -73.54111019999999112.746690663821155 -108.69736019999999 69.367158336178846 -38.384860199999991tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716080432599689429.post-91454916151860571192021-09-25T19:00:00.008-04:002022-02-25T13:16:13.402-05:00Exhibition A LA CARTA, Galería D'Museo, Venezuela. Many of us were sad to say goodbye to our previous home, but we turned around the situation and rolled up our sleeves and were able to open the school in October with a series of workshops, by November we were ready to start regular classes. We a great group of faculty members and range of art classes; we had a total of 6 exhibitions, one art fair, one open house and now added THE HUB on the 6th floor. Yes, we have been busy and have learned a big deal in the process. I can't believe today is the last day of the 2017 - 2018 school year!
Miranda Art Project Space is pleased to present Indecipherable Messages, a group exhibition curated by Nadia Martinez, featuring works by Teresa Waterman, Esther Rosa, Michelle Bratsafolis, and Kathryn Cameron. They are working across medium including paintings, mixed media, sculptures, and installations.

Every artwork in this exhibition is a form of expression that reflects a rotation of ideas, beliefs, concerns or exchanges among all those things within an artist’s mind. At first, the viewer might not be able to find meaning behind the marks or gestures that comprise an artwork or understand the circumstances that gave rise to its creation. The artist’s hand does not necessarily reveal a particular structure or order; however, a combination of intention and instinct often result in balance, a harmony of contrast, and rhythm within each piece. This process, unique to each artist, is a like a hidden language or code of expression; Indecipherable Messages whose meanings can be revealed only by their creators.
By PAUL LASTER, Jun. 2017

Displaying a wide range of artistic disciplines, the National Academy Museum & School’s 6th annual “Creative Mischief” exhibition is a great place to discover artists—both established practitioners and new talents. Featuring more than 100 works by National Academicians, faculty, alumni, and selected student artists, the show reflects the recent history of the 190-year-old cultural institution.

Tackling such contemporary concerns as spirituality, myth, nature and artifice, geometry and the body, illusion and form, symbolism, urban dreams, and play, “Creative Mischief” takes over the full exhibition space of the museum, which is housed in one of the few remaining Beaux-Arts mansions open to the public on Fifth Avenue, and in the Sonia Gechtoff Gallery at the National Academy School.
The Archer M. Huntington Townhouse on museum mile in New York City hosts the final installment of the National Academy Museum's annual art exhibition, "Creative Mischief" known for presenting a diverse roster of international artists. The museum announced plans to sell the famous Beaux Art mansion, which means, legend 5th Avenue loses one of its most exquisite public spaces.

Part of what makes "Creative Mischief" so engaging is that the illustrious, historic hosts subject matters that range from naughty to vice, from evil to nice. Sexual violence, despair in poverty, spiritual recalibration, and other topics of the human heart fill three floors of the beautiful mansion.

Latina mixed media artist Nadia Martinez hangs a site-specific installation of meticulously netted resistors and crystals, and fellow sculptor Borinquen Gallo incorporates architectural building motifs into casts of silver-grey automotive hubcaps.

Connection

Resistors, connectors, transistors, circuit boards are integral parts of technology; they are all man-made materials that connect to create the devices we use today to communicate. Those devices and their components have changed, evolved and gotten so sophisticated that technology is no longer isolated; it has become part of our everyday lives. The absence of a computer, a tablet or a cellphone leaves us feeling naked, disoriented, with the empty sensation of being disconnected from the rest of the world. In a way, they have become the idols of this new generation, in what we trust and where we seek comfort…

But what happens when the essence, the thousand parts of those devices get connected with other materials? Would they connect in the same way? Would they create a new form of communication?

This new exhibition explores the CONNECTION between computer parts, their environment, and the human being. A connection that can change depending on the manipulation of the piece and from which points it is held. It has grown from the idea of how things influence us to how we influence them; they are armors, shields, capes that can take on new shapes depending on circumstances and how we choose to interact with them.

The installations are like drawings on the walls or suspended in the air, creating the feeling of movement and structure, and at the same time revealing organic shapes. In the end, it is all about asking ourselves: what is our connection to technology? Does it connect or disconnect?Nadiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00359971705307148641noreply@blogger.com0121 Varick St, New York, NY 10013, USA40.7248803 -74.006346740.7245043 -74.0069772 40.725256300000005 -74.0057162
