Nadia Martinez's skill at controlling materials and transforming them into graceful, delicate forms of expression are refreshing and inspiring. In this body of work, by using sugar as her material, Nadia surrenders control and embraces process as a new aesthetic form, creating the conditions for generosity, contemplation, and discovery.

She questions the idea of "instant gratification." By revisiting a happy memory instead of relying on contemporary narratives of happiness and sweetness that Capitalism has promoted.
Nadia shares a happy memory with the public, and in exchange, she invites the viewer to do the same thing.

"These trying times have had everyone looking for comfort. In my search, I went deep into my childhood memories, back to "La Sierpe," my grandpa's molienda, his artisanal sugarcane mill, and plantation, and found my sweet and happy place—a wonderful space to escape from everything happening around me. In that memory, I found a new meaning for 'sweetness' that went beyond something that could be experienced with one sense. Remembering my family working together to make from scratch something sweet, I realized that the sweetness that I was looking for was found in community, traditions, and laughter. My project, Promise of Sweetness, chronicles the growing of sugarcane from seed to plant in an effort to conjure this happiness." – Nadia Martinez

Connection - My latest Solo Exhibition in NYC

Connection

Resistors, connectors, transistors, circuit boards are integral parts of technology; they are all man-made materials that connect to create the devices we use today to communicate. Those devices and their components have changed, evolved and gotten so sophisticated that technology is no longer isolated; it has become part of our everyday lives. The absence of a computer, a tablet or a cellphone leaves us feeling naked, disoriented, with the empty sensation of being disconnected from the rest of the world. In a way, they have become the idols of this new generation, in what we trust and where we seek comfort…

But what happens when the essence, the thousand parts of those devices get connected with other materials? Would they connect in the same way? Would they create a new form of communication?

This new exhibition explores the CONNECTION between computer parts, their environment, and the human being. A connection that can change depending on the manipulation of the piece and from which points it is held. It has grown from the idea of how things influence us to how we influence them; they are armors, shields, capes that can take on new shapes depending on circumstances and how we choose to interact with them.

The installations are like drawings on the walls or suspended in the air, creating the feeling of movement and structure, and at the same time revealing organic shapes. In the end, it is all about asking ourselves: what is our connection to technology? Does it connect or disconnect?

Nadia Martinez

Computer parts compose the sculptures of Nadia Martinez, in which nature and architecture are hidden sources of inspiration. The artificial nature of these components sometimes disappears, leaving space for a composition that reveals an organic shape. Many things are woven in this relationship with technology, as the discovery of the familiar in the unfamiliar, the observation of things that surround us, the awareness of how technology became a solid and integrated part of our lives. In her works, Nadia has found a way to also insert everyday materials, focusing on how things influence the human being and vice-versa. In this unique approach, the construction of the artist becomes an open process in which the things assume different shapes, such as armors, shields, nets, and whatever determines the interchange. The work is calm, offering a balance between stillness and subtle movement. The desire, the action, the research for a path of connection and disconnection, seems to reverberate with the antique mythology in which legend and reality constantly change their roles. www.nadiamartinez.com

Read More
